Medical Information for DDP Staff

One of the worst aspects of deafness is missing out on all the general knowledge that is picked up just by overhearing conversations of your parents, listening to the radio, etc.  Deaf people often are lacking in medical knowledge that others would have acquired from their culture as they grew up.  The foreign members of the DDP staff were surprised recently to see "hemorrhoids" listed as an item of discussion on our staff meeting agenda.  It turned out that lack of knowledge and misinformation had led to some of the staff being seriously concerned about this condition, so we contacted Sr. Regina Pellicore's village health program in Boeung Tum Pun. She arranged for Matrai, their Khmer nurse, to come and speak to our staff, to explain the medical condition and to answer their questions.

Matrai began by asking the staff their concerns. At first they were hesitant to speak out but when she showed them pictures of hemorrhoids and started to explain how they developed, the hands started to go up.  Quite a few questions surfaced, and after an hour of back-and-forth the DDP staff were both better informed and more at ease about this medical condition.
