Barbecue for Former Pupils
of Caritas Magdalene School

28 February 1999
CMS past pupils around a BBQ grill About 70 former pupils of Caritas Magdalene School came to enjoy HK's favorite outdoor activity, a barbecue, on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. BBQs here are unlike those in the US because here it is only meat. Chicken wings, pork chops, fish balls, slices of beef, hotdogs, and curried beef balls all found their way to the end of BBQ forks. There were no vegetable, potato chips, soft drinks, or any other distractions. Not even napkins. A BBQ here is really quite an event!
The entire playground of the CMS school This photo shows the entired school playground! And it's on the sixth floor! Inside the open doors to the right is a large open hall which serves as morning assembly area, more playground, and lunch room. Space is at a premium in most Hong Kong schools and there usually are no school sports teams, etc.
Children of the past pupils playing A sign of how old we are all becoming--the children of the former pupils play together with one of the teachers from the school who was organizing some activities for them. All the children are hearing. Very few cases of deafness are hereditary. (This location is inside the open doors at the right of the previous photo.)
Some of the students and me Here I am with some of the past pupils. I can't handle all that meat so I eat slowly, emphasizing that I like the meat well done. Usually at HK barbecues, each person is provided with a frozen package of two pounds of fish, beef, pork, and chicken--and they finish it all!
