Conference of Pastoral Workers with Catholic Deaf People in Asia

7-14 October, 2005

Today was Sunday and the morning was free and people from the conference went their various ways, most of them exploring Rome.  Peter Monty, a Jesuit priest from Canada, and Charlie Dittmeier went to the old San Clementi Church.  After lunch our meetings began again.

Asian Deaf Conference, Day 3

The Coloseum in Rome
San Clementi Church is near the Colosseum, one of Rome's most popular tourist spots.  So many people visit the Colosseum that some of the streets are blocked off for pedestrian traffic only.

Pyramid at the wall of Rome
We took the Metro (subway) part of the way back to the hotel for lunch, but had to walk the last part.  That route took us past a pyramid near one of the remaining sections of the old walls of Rome.

Fr. Tom Coughlin

The first part of the afternoon program was a presentation by Fr. Tom Coughlin about his vocation program in California for young deaf men.  It is associated with the Dominicans.

After his talk, Tom answered questions from the group.  Several are interested in religious vocations although it is very a very difficult road for deaf people to follow.

Agnes Peter from MalaysiaThe final part of the afternoon was reports from various country groups.  Here Agnes Peter reports on the R.E.A.C.H. program for Catholic deaf people, one of the most successful in Asia, in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.
