Like too many Catholic parishes around the world, the English-speaking Catholic community in Phnom Penh does not know each other very well. Part of that is our Catholic tradition which has not emphasized friendship, fellowship, really community among parish members, but also in Phnom Penh it is a result of our using the auditorium at World Vision where we must be out of the building quickly after our Saturday evening mass. There was never time to get together. Now, however, our new Sunday morning community decided they wanted to have an opportunity to gather so a potluck supper was arranged. |
Janne Ritskes and Shawn Kohl represented the two hosting families and gave a welcome and introduction at the beginning of the gathering on a Saturday evening after the World Vision mass. |
Jenny Kohl (blue dress), in whose house the supper was held, stood with other guests during the brief introductory remarks and blessing over the food. |
Each family was asked to bring a dish and there was plenty of good food, something to fit everyone's taste, even for the 25 or so children who came. |
The evening was rather informal and maybe the best part was just sitting and talking and getting to know the people we see each Sunday at mass. |
