Christmas 2007

Salesian Sisters Drama

21 December 2007

Another tradition, in addition to the Christmas bazaar, at the Salesian Sisters Technical School for Girls is a Christmas drama. In the past few years, Kathy Morefield, a Maryknoll Affiliate from Seattle, has adapted popular Christmas stories for a Cambodian context with great success. This year her production was based on the 1946 movie It's a Wonderful Life. manger scene

Early arrivals look at handicrafts for sale, items not sold at the bazaar last Sunday!
Some of the students offered simple food and snacks for the play-goers who hadn't eaten properly before coming.

The students spent all day transforming a dining area into a stage and performance area, but there were still last minute adjustments to be made as the first people arrived.

Almost every event in Cambodia begins with traditional Khmer classical dance, and this evening was no exception.
Classical Khmer dance
Following the classical dance was a more modern, hip-hop group with a lot of energy.

No Christmas program is complete without a Christmas tableau and this one was complete with a live baby.
A Christmas tableau
One of the most energetic performances of the evening was offered by the girls from the kindergarten class who danced and swayed through a medley of Christmas songs.

The play itself was a simple theme with a simple setting, but the story was strong and well performed.
Then the play itself began
Almost all the girls participate in an onstage or backstage capacity, and one group performed lovely Christmas carols during breaks and scene changes.

Finally the performance was over and Kathy Morefield and the whole crew gathered for a bow.
