Christmas Celebrations in Cambodia--2001

Khmer School of Language -- 22 December

Merry Christmas in Khmer Every year the Khmer School of Language holds a Christmas party for its pupils. And every year it is on a Saturday afternoon right before Christmas, at almost the same time as the Catholic mass so I go and make an appearance and then duck out early to get to the Catholic liturgy. Here is a greeting in both Khmer and English to welcome everyone to the school celebration.
Reading a Christmas gospel This year the school party had a much more religious tone than I remembered from last year. KSL was started by SAO, the South Asian Outreach, a Christian NGO, especially to teach ministers who wanted to evangelize the Cambodian people. Other students are more than welcome, and many Maryknollers have studied there over the years. Here a student and a teacher read a gospel selection in Khmer and English.
KSL teachers singing in sign language Singing Christmas hymns and carols in both English and Khmer is always part of the KSL celebration. This year they added a Christmas song sung in sign language, here performed by some of the teachers in the traditional formal dress for women in Cambodia.
Students watch the performances Quite a number of students came for the celebration, including some who had recently finished their courses of study. In the front row of this picture is a family who were going to take part in a short Christmas play based on the gospel story of Jesus' birth.
