Life in the Sun

16 June 2009

Cambodia is a tropical country that has lots of sun and lots of heat.  The people generally deal well with the heat, but they consider the sun requires strong defensive action.  Western values have infiltrated the society so that light skin is considered more beautiful, "better" than darker skin.  Women go to great lengths to cover up their arms to prevent any tanning that most Western women would love to have.  Remember that the normal temperatures are in the mid 90šs as you look at these young women with long sleeves, fairly heavy--even fur-lined--jackets, and long gloves made only for sun protection.  And notice, too, that not only the people but even the cars get covered up!
