Early Morning in Phnom Penh

16 October 2009

Several days a week, Charlie rides across Phnom Penh at 6:00 AM on the back of a motorcycle to have mass with different congregations of Catholic sisters.  The morning trips are not boring because much of Cambodia has already been up and about for an hour or two and there are many interesting scenes of the city waking up and getting established for another day.

A guard happy to see the dawn
Thousands of businesses and homes have guards like this man watching their property and possessions through the night.  Most guards, especially those sitting outside all night long alone, are probably very happy to see the dawn.
Setting up a food stall
These two women are setting up a small food stall in front of their house, carrying out the tables and stools and pots of food and soft drinks and other paraphernalia that will earn them a few dollars during the day.
Grandmother and child
This grandmother sits outside the family business shortly before sunrise, enjoying her grandchild for a few minutes before making a living takes over.
Early morning people on the street
One woman walks to work and another brushes her teeth on the curb while a man maybe waits for a ride. Behind them others have already set up a sidewalk stall for the day's business.
