New Year's Day

14 April 2013

Today was New Year's Day and a Sunday, and it was really quiet with literally the majority of the population having left the city to return to their villages in the provinces.

Setting up speakers for new year's music

Yesterday I cringed when I saw this man setting up large speakers in the little "village" of houses below my window. Cambodian people love noise. A party can't be fun if it isn't loud. They played music in the afternoon but mercifully they had stopped when I came home from the evening mass. And actually the lights were out and they were in bed by 9:00 PM--on New Year's Eve!
A New Year's shrine for the spirits

This morning the place of honor in the village yard had shifted from the speakers to a small shrine set up to keep the spirits happy with soft drinks, fruits, cookies, flowers, and incense.
Off to visit relatives

This man was off in the early morning to visit his relatives, carrying the obligatory gift of flowers tied to his moto basket.
Preparing a family visit

A family with a bit more money prepared to head out in their car to visit their elders.
