New Year Street Scenes

April, 2011

Officially today was another public holiday but basically only the government offices and banks and NGOs observed it.  The ordinary people recognize reality, that four days off is plenty, and it's time to get back to making a living.  Thus most of the small family owned shops were open for business today.

Small shops open for business

These small shops are owned by families who live behind, above, and in their shops.  They can't afford to be closed too long.
Car Wash

As the richer Phnom Penh population returned from the dusty provinces in their cars, the car washes had plenty of customers.
Gas station attendent

This young man waited for customers at a new gas station just recently opened.  Note his stool, made from a luxury hardwood from Cambodia's forests.  This kind of cultural practice is one of the reasons for the disappearing forests.
Collecting trash for recycling

And of course the poor people with their trash collecting carts are glad to see things getting back to normal and people generating more trash for recycling.
