Walking to the river

Cambodian
Water Festival

23-25 November 2007

Preparations for the Festival

Photos and flags on the main streets

For all major public holidays, workers erect large photographs of the present king and his parents, the retired king and queen, and lots of flags.

Putting up a picture of the king

The Royal Palace has its own viewing stand overlooking the river. Here a crane adjusts the photo of the king displayed there.

Portable toilets along the riverfront

This year many more portable toilets were made available along the waterfront where the largest crowds gathered.

Lighting floats on the river

Across the river are anchored barges with large lighted displays that add color and excitement at night.

Bringing the boat to the river

A crew from a rural province proudly propels their boat to the river on a bicycle-wheeled trolley.

Crane for putting boats in river

A crane on the waterfront was kept busy lowering more than 400 boats into the river.

Final instructions for street cleaners

The green-coated clean-up crew from Cintri receive final instructions from their supervisor.

Family waiting for the action to begin

An early arriving family from the provinces sits and rests by the palace wall before the crowds assemble.
