On the left is the father, named Sopheap. He was my first motordupe driver when I arrived four years ago. I was fortunate because he knows a little English from working with American soldiers during the Vietnam War (the American War, as it's called here). When I asked to take their picture, their son--my present motordupe driver-- was with them and I automatically started composing a picture with the three of them. I saw a look of consternation on their faces and then remembered the Cambodia taboo against taking pictures of three people. The taboo says that the middle one will suffer misfortune, so I hurriedly rearranged the photo with just the parents.
