Khmer New Year

Buddhism at the New Year

The waterfront along the Mekong River is the people's place to play and where they gather each weekend and on special occasions like the Khmer New Year. The royal palace is decorated with Buddhist banners for the new year. And across the street, a Buddha statue has a new garment and a guard on special duty for the festivities.

Flags at Wat Lanka
Every Sunday evening thousands of Phnom Penh-ites walk along the riverfront, just enjoying their city. Today some Buddhist monks were also mingling with the crowds. Nearer to the Maryknoll house, Wat Lanka had lots of Buddhist flags set out for decorations.
