Chrism Mass in Phnom Penh

The blessed holy oils

The three newly consecrated holy oils

Many things are done quite differently in Cambodia, and the traditional Catholic Chrism Mass is one of them. In most dioceses, it is held on the morning of Holy Thursday although some places now have moved it to Tuesday morning to lessen the flurry of intense liturgical activity of what is known as the Triduum, the three holy days of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday.

In Phnom Penh, however, the Chrism Mass was held today, a full week before Holy Thursday. Thirty-five priests, almost all in the country, participated and renewed their commitment to priesthood along with the three bishops here in Cambodia.
