Do you remember the old "CHIPS" TV show, about the California Highway Patrol? Well, now it's the Cambodia Highway Patrol. Maryknoll in Cambodia is the only region in the Maryknoll world that has a policy that all members should wear helmets when traveling because we're constantly riding on motordupes, small motorbikes that carry passengers on the rear. It's basically dangerous because of the hundreds of thousands of motordupes crowding the streets, the few streets that are paved so that all traffic uses them, and the total chaos of Cambodian driving where there are no rules. Here's a shot of most of the MMAFers with their helmets, lined up for morning roll call before hitting the streets to make the world a better place.
Labor Workshop
28 March 2000
One of the MMAFers in Cambodia, Pat Capuano--a Los Angeles attorney in his previous life--is working with the Cambodian Labor Organization here. Workers have a rough life in Cambodia with some really mean employers and little legal protection. Pat helped organize a three-day workshop for labor activists and lawyers, inviting an AFL-CIO union attorney from the US to speak to them on protecting and developing their rights.
